A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, prompting widespread tsunami alerts across the Pacific, including for Japan and Alaska. The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake at 8.0 magnitude but later upgraded it after further analysis.

The epicenter was located around 125 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, near Avacha Bay, at a shallow depth of 19.3 km. The shallow nature of the quake amplified the shaking effects, causing widespread panic and structural damage.

Terrifying Moments Captured on Camera

Social media flooded with videos from Kamchatka showing intense shaking inside buildings. In one clip, furniture is seen violently swaying in a residential apartment. Another video shows seismic alarms going off at a monitoring center as the earthquake hit.

Despite the terrifying scenes, no casualties have been reported so far. However, some structural damage has occurred, including to a kindergarten, according to Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov. "This was the strongest quake we've experienced in decades," he said in a statement on Telegram.

Tsunami Warnings Across the Pacific

The US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for "hazardous tsunami waves" that could reach coastal areas of Russia and Japan within hours. Alaska was placed under a tsunami advisory.

Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that tsunami waves up to 3 meters (approximately 10 feet) could strike its Pacific coast between 10:00 and 11:30 AM local time (01:00–02:30 GMT). A tsunami of up to 1 meter was also expected in large coastal regions starting around 0100 GMT.

In response to the threat, authorities ordered the evacuation of Severo-Kurilsk, a small town on the southern end of the Kamchatka Peninsula. The Russian Ministry for Emergency Services reported a tsunami wave of 32 cm had already reached the coast.

High Seismic Risk Zone

Kamchatka lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire — one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The area regularly experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to tectonic plate activity.

Tsunami watches were also issued for Guam and several Micronesian islands as regional authorities remain on high alert.
